Cogniti and The University of Sydney

The platform

Educators build the AI agents themselves

Educators describe how an agent should behave, ground it in their own course material and put the agent where students already work. Without writing a single line of code. An agent can, for example, explain, ask questions, give feedback or guide students through an assignment, based on the educator's content and approach.

Educators stay in control

Educators set the role, instructions, sources and boundaries of every agent themselves, matched to subject content, course material and learning goals.

Directly in the learning environment

The agents are available in the digital environment where students already work: Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace or Schoolbox, over LTI 1.3.

Track record

Developed in education, for education

Cogniti was developed at the University of Sydney by Associate Professor Danny Liu and colleagues, out of their own teaching practice. In 2025 Cogniti won the Research and Education category at the Australian Financial Review's AI Awards.

Start here

A four-week pilot, at no cost

Start with up to 50 educators. The pilot needs little technical setup and includes training and practical templates. Cogniti can host the pilot free of charge, so educators can experience what it does in practice before the institution commits.

Data and privacy

European hosting on Microsoft Azure

Cogniti runs on Microsoft Azure and can be deployed in a European Azure region, so data stays within a European data centre. According to Cogniti's privacy policy, personal information is not used to train AI models.

For institutions that already work with Microsoft 365 or Azure, Cogniti fits into a familiar technical environment. During implementation we agree together which region Cogniti runs in and which requirements apply to security, privacy and data processing.

Working with us

Outfox as implementation partner

Outfox supports European educational institutions in a secure and practical introduction of Cogniti, suited to their own organisation.

01

We set up the pilot

Together we choose where Cogniti is used, set up the first agents and make sure educators can start quickly.

02

We support educators

With training, examples and templates, educators learn to build good AI agents for their own teaching.

03

We handle the implementation

We support the connection to the learning environment, hosting in the right region and the step from pilot to structural use.

Technology and privacy

Proven technology, flexible and secure

Hosting, model choice and handling of personal data.

  • Hosted on Microsoft AzureApplication, database, processing of course material and AI models run on Microsoft Azure.
  • A choice of AI modelsEach organisation decides which models from OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, Google and Mistral are available.
  • Personal data not used for trainingCogniti states that personal information is not used to train AI models.

The team

We bring Cogniti to your teaching

AI can strengthen the interaction between students and teachers, with the teacher in charge. That conviction is why we work with Cogniti. Together we help your institution: we involve your educators, make the agents useful in everyday teaching, and make sure Cogniti meets your IT and privacy requirements.

Richard Heesen
Richard Heesen Educator Engagement Lead Helps educators get started and keeps them involved after launch. Has built communities around education and innovation for over fifteen years, lately with a focus on responsible use of AI in Dutch education.
Mark de Jong
Mark de Jong AI Adoption Lead Helps educators and students put the agents to meaningful use, from first exploration to everyday practice. Previously spent twelve years on valorisation and user research at Utrecht University.
Marcel Oostdijk
Marcel Oostdijk Implementation Lead Works with your IT and privacy teams to make sure Cogniti meets your institution's requirements. Has built platforms for European education and research networks since 2005.

Who is Outfox?

Outfox is a Dutch company based in Eindhoven. Since 2005 we have built and run collaboration platforms for education and research. We bring that experience with educational institutions, their systems and their privacy requirements to Cogniti.
